Grootvlei Power Station Projects

Buffalo refurbishment project:
A Buffalo Chain Scraper is a bulk coal moving machine that moves 1000 tonnes of coal per hour. The machine at Grootvlei power station had been used as a primary coal feed for two years, reliably moving a total of 8 million tonnes of coal. Given this work load, the Buffalo had deteriorated and system reliability was becoming an issue. Design advances over time, of this particular system, along with the condition of the system at Grootvlei, meant that an upgrade project be commissioned to refurbish the system.
Project value: 6.8 mil ZAR.

Equipment stores project:
The Grootvlei power station is whats known as a "return to service" power station, which reached full production capacity in February 2011. There was a need identified to build storage facilities to accommodate strategic spares for the station. The project was allocated to Attillainova in November 2009 and was engineered, motivated to funding, put out on tender and managed until project completion in May 2011.
The stores project included the compilation of the user requirement, works information and NEC documentation. It also covered approval and tender technical evaluation up to contractor appointments, across all disciplines. Engineering management, project management, contractor management and quality management of the project was managed and concluded by Attillainova.
Project value: 14.75 mil ZAR

Dry coal bypass project
The Grootvlei power station had a single primary feed for its coal burners and a project was comissioned to built a second feed. A dry coal bypass was identified as a way to address the requirement and Attillainova was comissioned to scope and motivated the project to the local and senior capital approval committees. Attillainova also wrote the works information, prepared the tender documents, technical evaluation for the project and managed the project implementation.

The project included the defining of the electrical project; including ordering of 2 medium voltage 6.6kV panels, the construction of a MCC to house the low voltage equipment, the provision of a 750kVA 6.6kV to 400V transformer, and the MV cabling from the new MV panels to the MCC and the new Buffalo chain scraper conveyor.
Project value:43 mil ZAR

Weighbridge Project
With the increase in the number of units in operation the amount of coal being consumed by Grootvlei increased dramatically, requiring additional coal weighing facilities. The new weighbridge project and the existing weighbridge refurbishment was engineered and implemented by Attillainova.
